Art and People : Blue hour, Cheng Tsunlung, Cloud Gate 2 Original article in Chinese published on October 08, 2013 via World Journal |
In French life philosophy, each morning and evening, there is a moment called blue hours , in French, they call it “l’heure bleu”. The moment is a period of twilight where there is neither full day light nor complete darkness. The Taiwanese choreographer, assistant director Chen TsunLung told me the blue moment came to him 1 years ago in a cozy summer day in dawn in New York City. At the time, he was at a art residency program in NYC, according to him, it was the most depressing moment in life because ” I can’t speak for myself due to the language limitation, I was so lost. I don’t know what principle I should hold.” In searching his own identity, he gone through a very painful and lengthy process, until that “Blue hour” came to his life.
"It was a chilly and cozy summer night. I sit outside the porch of my dorm, wondering, pondering, and felt fuzzy about my life. When I realized, I had sit for 7 hours. Then it was dawn, the sky was blue and the summer light illuminated. I saw the twilight and I know my "blue hour" had came."He had some thought at the moment, he said, " All the fuzziness were suddenly clear. I saw my inner self and I was able to be myself again." He made a breakthrough of his life. After the
residency, he went back to Taiwan and choreographed “The Blue Hour” The ending of the work leaves in a white blank stage, Tsun Lung want the audience stay with him in that "The Blue Hour" moment.
I interviewed Tsun Lung in a typical New York City snow day in January 2012,recalling my first impression on him, I remembered he is a very handsome looking guy and his body speak for his profession, but I like him the most is his sincerely heart and a clear soul. A year and half later, we were in different time zone and did an interview again over the phone. It was my day time and his dark night, and the weather this September in NYC is whimsical. The phone interview went well and we were talking as we have been known each other for life. He is still a very truthful and sincere artist and he told me, ” you are still a very passionate and positive person as I met you first time.” I was surprised to hear his comment, briefly chatted with him what I was been through in the past year and recently. We ended the conversation with “Meet you in New York”, his dance group “The Clod Gate 2” is invited by Joyce Theater to give a performance during October 26. He will present a work he choreographed years ago, called ”On The Road”.The Joyce theater credit ”On The Road” as a piece that “ unites Eastern and Western tradition to convey a powerful artistic message." but i think this comment is too frivolous. It is a piece that question about life and the existence, and you will hear Tom Waits voice at the end of the performance. I told Tsun Lung that I look forward to the performance and look forward to "The Blue hour"performance in New York City.
